Closter is known as the Hub of the Northern Valley — a borough of about three square miles where the old Dutch farm roads of Piermont Road and Closter Dock Road meet, lined with stone houses built by the Demarest, Naugle and Westervelt families. Around them sit postwar colonials and split-levels, and on the east side larger homes on wooded lots rising toward Alpine and the top of the Palisades.
Closter sits at the center of the Northern Valley, where Piermont Road, Closter Dock Road and Schraalenburgh Road meet and the old Northern Branch rail line once brought Manhattan commuters. Its streets still carry the names of the Dutch families who farmed here — Demarest, Durie, Naugle, Westervelt — and many of their sandstone houses survive among postwar colonials, ranches and split-levels. East of the center the land climbs toward Alpine and the highest point of the Palisades, with larger homes on wooded lots near the Closter Nature Center. Each kind of house needs a different approach: stone walls that resist new wiring, mid-century homes with several ground-floor entries, and wooded lots with long, dark side yards.
