Essex Fells is a 1.4-square-mile borough laid out in the 1890s as a purely residential community — about 800 custom-built houses, many on lots of several acres, with no apartment buildings, no office buildings, a single commercial structure, and no traffic lights. Properties here are large, wooded, and set well back from the road, which means security has to cover perimeters, outbuildings and long approaches rather than a front door a few feet from the sidewalk.
Essex Fells is a 1.4-square-mile borough about 500 feet up in the hills of western Essex County. It was laid out in the 1890s as a planned residential enclave, and a 1928 ordinance kept it that way — no apartments, no offices, no traffic lights. The roughly 800 homes are custom-built, many on lots of several acres, behind trees along winding roads near Grover Cleveland Park and the pond on Fells Road; the only rentals are carriage houses. Security here is a perimeter problem: long private drives, detached garages, pool houses and guest quarters, and a main house nobody can see from the street.
