Franklin Lakes covers nearly ten square miles at the edge of the Ramapo foothills, bordered by Wyckoff, Mahwah and Oakland in Bergen County and Wayne and North Haledon in Passaic County. Interstate 287 and Route 208 cross the borough, High Mountain and the Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve rise to the south, and small lake communities such as Crystal Lakes, Shadow Lake and Bakers Pond are scattered through the woods. Most homes are large custom houses on an acre or more, set behind gates and long driveways with pools and detached garages that cannot be seen from the road.
