Hillsdale is a three-square-mile Pascack Valley borough that grew around its railroad station in the late 19th century, with the Garden State Parkway cutting through the west side and a corner of the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir at its northern edge. Older houses near Broadway and the station sit close together on narrow lots, while the postwar streets off Hillsdale Avenue and Wierimus Road hold capes, split-levels and larger colonials on deeper, tree-lined lots.
Hillsdale took its name from a dale among the hills, and it still reads that way: the borough rises west from the Pascack Valley Line and Broadway, across the Garden State Parkway, toward the Saddle River and Ho-Ho-Kus line, with a corner of the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir at its northern edge. The streets around the Hillsdale station hold houses from the railroad subdivisions of the late 1800s and early 1900s, close-set with front porches and stone basements; farther out, Hillsdale Avenue, Pascack Road and Wierimus Road lead to postwar capes, split-levels and colonials on deeper lots backing onto trees and Beechwood Park.
