Leonia climbs the western face of the Palisades from Overpeck County Park to the ridge above Fort Lee, a borough of tree-lined streets developed from 1899 onward and shaped by the artists' colony that grew around the Leonia School of Illustration. Its houses are older, close together and full of original detail, so a system has to protect them without tearing into plaster and trim.
Leonia sits on the western slope of the Palisades, dropping from about 300 feet at its eastern edge to near sea level at Overpeck County Park, with the Turnpike curving along its northern border and Grand Avenue running through the center. Most of the borough was built out after the Leonia Heights Land Company began marketing lots in 1899, and the artists' colony that followed the 1915 founding of the Leonia School of Illustration left a town of older single-family houses on close, tree-lined lots — with a few far older landmarks such as the Vreeland House of 1786. That means plaster walls and original trim, porches and side doors, and detached garages at the end of narrow driveways.
