Montclair is a 6.2-square-mile township climbing the east slope of First Watchung Mountain — 41,000 people, seven NJ Transit stations, and housing that runs from grand Victorians and Tudors on deep Upper Montclair lots to two-family houses in the South End and a wave of new multifamily buildings around Montclair Center. A house with four entries and a carriage house needs a different design than a rented floor on Orange Road, and the township's alarm ordinance applies to both.
Montclair climbs the east slope of First Watchung Mountain — 6.2 square miles of Essex County with Manhattan on the horizon from Eagle Rock, brooks running down through its parks, and seven NJ Transit stations on the Montclair-Boonton Line from Bay Street to Mountain Avenue. Its 41,000 residents live on very different blocks: deep-lot Victorians, Tudors and colonials in Upper Montclair above Watchung Avenue (ZIP 07043), tighter two-family streets in the South End around Orange Road, and new apartment buildings around Six Corners in Montclair Center. An Upper Mountain Avenue house has a porch, side, basement and kitchen door plus a carriage house; a rented floor downtown has one door and a landlord who won't allow drilling.
