Mountain Lakes is a planned residential borough of just under three square miles, built from 1910 onward around seven man-made lakes and now almost entirely within a National Register historic district. Its roughly 450 surviving Hapgood stucco homes have original plaster, chestnut trim and no two identical floor plans — and many back onto water or the woods of the Tourne. Security here has to be invisible to the architecture and complete across the lot.
Mountain Lakes is a planned borough laid out by Herbert Hapgood from 1910 around seven man-made lakes — Mountain, Birchwood, Crystal, Wildwood among them — with the Boulevard curving through the center and the Tourne's wooded ridges on the western edge. Roughly 450 of his stucco Hapgood houses survive, and nearly the whole borough is a National Register historic district. That means century-old plaster, original chestnut trim and no two identical floor plans; many lots run down to the water with docks and boathouses, the rest back onto deep woods, and the exposed side of the house is the one you can't see from the street.
