Oradell is a two-and-a-half-square-mile borough built along the Hackensack River, where the Oradell Reservoir Dam holds back one of North Jersey's main water supplies. Its streets of Tudors, center-hall colonials and capes climb west from the river and Kinderkamack Road, and the low-lying blocks on the east side know what heavy rain does: when the reservoir overtopped the dam after Hurricane Irene in 2011, flooding reached Oradell and New Milford.
Oradell grew up around the Hackensack River and the dam that forms the Oradell Reservoir, finished in 1923 and fed by the Pascack Brook and Dwars Kill. Kinderkamack Road runs north to south through the middle of town past the Oradell station on the Pascack Valley Line, with the reservoir and Haworth to the east and Paramus to the west. The housing is established — 1920s and 1930s Tudors and colonials, postwar capes and split-levels — often with finished basements and original plaster, and the low streets nearest the river carry real flood exposure when storms push the reservoir over the dam.
