Randolph is a 21-square-mile Highlands township that the state planning commission calls half rural, half suburban — elevations from 550 to 1,120 feet, a 16-mile trail system through Brundage, Freedom and Hidden Valley parks, and neighborhoods that residents name by section: Mount Freedom along Sussex Turnpike, Ironia out toward Chester, Shongum around its private lake. Homes sit on wooded half-acre to multi-acre lots with tree cover that hides a back door from every neighbor.
Randolph climbs the wooded Highlands ridges of Morris County from Route 10 at about 550 feet to over 1,100 feet, and the state calls it half rural, half suburban. Residents name their section: Mount Freedom, with its own ZIP code along Sussex Turnpike; Ironia, out Dover-Chester Road toward Chester; and Shongum, around Shongum Lake. Most homes are colonials and split-levels on wooded lots, many backing onto Brundage, Freedom or Hidden Valley parks and the 16-mile trail network, where a rear slider or basement walkout is out of sight of any neighbor.
