Saddle River is a borough of about five square miles in northern Bergen County, named for the river that runs through it and zoned for a minimum of two acres per home. Fields, horse farms and woodland surround historic houses along West Saddle River Road and newer mansions on long private drives, so the main house is often hundreds of feet from the road and out of sight of any neighbor.
Saddle River covers about five square miles between Allendale, Ramsey, Upper Saddle River, Woodcliff Lake, Ho-Ho-Kus and Waldwick, with the Saddle River itself winding through the borough and Route 17 crossing its western side. A two-acre minimum lot size keeps the landscape open: fields, horse farms and woodland along East and West Saddle River Roads, historic houses in the Saddle River Center district, and newer mansions at the end of long, often gated drives.
