Vernon is a 70-square-mile township on the New York border, where the Vernon Valley and the Wallkill bottomlands run between Hamburg Mountain and the Wawayanda ridges. Ski-area condos, private lake communities more than a thousand feet up and spread-out farm properties each need a different approach, and many of them sit empty for weeks between visits.
Vernon Township covers about 70 square miles along the New York border, from the Vernon Valley and the Wallkill River lowlands to the ridges of Wawayanda State Park, with the Appalachian Trail crossing in between. At the foot of the slopes, Mountain Creek — the former Great Gorge and Vernon Valley ski areas — is ringed by condos and townhouses, many of them second homes. To the east, Highland Lakes sits about 1,260 feet up, a private lake community of cottages and year-round houses on hilly, wooded lots, alongside Upper Greenwood Lake, Barry Lakes and Lake Wallkill.
