Wharton is a two-square-mile borough that grew up as Port Oram, where Morris County's iron ore was loaded onto the Morris Canal; the town took its name in 1902 from industrialist Joseph Wharton, who ran its iron works. The neighborhoods keep the old names — Port Oram, Irondale, Luxemburg, Maryville, Mount Pleasant — and the housing is a tight grid of older single- and two-family homes on small lots.
