The same river that defines the town floods it, as Hurricane Ida showed in 2021. Cranford is a 4.9-square-mile Union County township built around the Rahway River, which winds south through the center of town past Nomahegan Park, Droescher's Mill and the 1908 Canoe Club along the Olmsted-designed Rahway River Parkway. The housing is older than in most of the county — Victorians from the 1890s and 1900s near downtown, colonials from the 1930s and 1940s in sections like Heathermeade and Indian Village — and the downtown around the Raritan Valley Line station mixes storefronts with new riverfront apartments on South Avenue. The river is the defining risk: Hurricane Ida in 2021 put water into basements across the riverside blocks, and sump pumps run all year.
