Pequannock Township is two postal towns in one: Pompton Plains to the north and Pequannock to the south, laid out on the flat ground between the Pompton River and the ridge of the Highlands, with Route 23 running the length of its eastern edge. Most of the housing is postwar capes, ranches and colonials on compact lots, and a large share sits in the Pompton River flood plain that has gone under water in every major storm — so water protection belongs in the system, not as an afterthought.
Pequannock Township runs north to south along Route 23 in eastern Morris County, with the Pompton River on one side and the wooded ridge of Mountainside Park on the other. The northern half is Pompton Plains, with its own post office, the 1872 railroad station turned township museum, and the Cedar Crest retirement community; the southern half is Pequannock proper, the older settlement along the Newark-Pompton Turnpike and its 18th-century Dutch houses.
